Descriptive epidemiologic studies of sporotrichosis in chonnam province during a thirteen-year-period

Abstract
The observations of 38 sporotrichosis patients confirmed by clinical, histopathologic and mycological studies have been made in the Department of Dermatology at Chonnam National University Hospital for thirteen years from 1979 to 1991.

The results are follows:
1. During this period, there were j38 sporotrichosis patients(0.08%) out of 48.660 outpatients who visited the Department of Dermatology. The highest incidence of sporotrichosis (5 cases a year) was observed in 1984, 1985 and 1988. However,
there was no big difference in occurrence of the disease.

2. The highest incidence of the disease occurred at the age of the fifties and sixties, and the ratio between male and female was 1.1:1.

3. In Kwangju and Chonnam province, the diseases were distributed throughout the cities and counties.

4. Many patients encountered were the inhabitants of rural area. Occupationally, the highest occurrence rate was noted in ascending order of farmer, unemployed, and office worker.

5. Almost all initial lesions appeared on the exposed areas. Upper extremities, especially right hand were the most common involved sites (26 cases, 68%)

6. The duration of skin lesions was 2 months in 8 cases(21%), and 3 months in 7 cases(18%).

7. Forty five percent of the total cases visited our department in winter time, and that was higher than in any other seasons. The highest rate of monthly distribution was found in April (9 cases, 24%).

8. All of the cases consisted of lymphocutaneous and fixed cutaneous type. The seventy nine percent of the 38 cases was lymphocutaneous type, and remained 21% was fixed cutaneous type.
